Day Two in Berlin

A much later and more leisurely start to the day.  Grabbed a light breakfast at the train station and then headed to the Berlin Wall memorial (about a 15 minute tram ride).  There were many pictures and displays that outlined the history of the wall in that area.  It is hard to imagine what the people had to go through during those difficult times – so many lives impacted and so many buildings destroyed.

As we were walking along Charlotte saw a face that looked very familiar.  Turns out it was a gal from the gym that she knows and her husband.  What are the odds?  Chatted with them for a bit before moving on.  We finished our visit there, went back to the train station and then went by train to the Bundestag (where the German parliament meets).  We had tried to get tickets online to visit but were not successful and had pretty much given up on visiting the dome above the building.  We found out that there were lots of times available later in the day so we stood in line for an hour to get tickets for 7:30 that evening.

With tickets in hand we then found a place to have some lunch before moving on to our next stop - the Topography of Terror museum which outlines in pictures much of what happened during Hitler’s reign.  It is very sobering to think about what took place and how many lives were impacted.

Took a short rest before heading back to the Bundestag and taking our tour.  After a very warm, muggy day (probably in the high 80’s) we walked out to rain and thunderstorms.  The weather took care of the crowds and we were able to start our tour a few minutes early.  After going through security (like the airport) we received an audio guide which spoke a little about the government and pointed out many of the buildings close by.

Tomorrow morning we head to Prague.
